Well look at that! The farmers market is now going to be open through winter. Shorter hours as colder weather and shorter days set in, but still – there’s a nice resource!
My second sourdough starter didn’t. Start that is. I cleaned out the old batch, prepared the new batch, made sure I was measuring properly, but was too lazy to pour boiling water over my starter container after cleaning it. The starter lasted a few days, bubbled & grew as its bacteria developed, sunk back down and lost its bubble to await the growth of yeast.
Growth it had, but not of yeast. Mold! Icky, coating the sides of the jar mold! Time to scrap that attempt. Next time I will not be lazy, and I will pour boiling water over my starter container. By now, the weather has shifted and my apartment has cooled and is remaining below 70 degrees. I’m stubbornly not turning on the heat yet, as I only just officially turned off the air conditioning last week. I don’t think these cooler conditions would be conducive to yeast growth. I think I remember reading that a starter likes a 70-80 degree range for its first stage of life.
I’ll keep an eye on the weather forecasts. If temperatures look to rise again, which is entirely possible in North Carolina in the fall, I’ll give the starter another go. In the meantime, I’m going to make a loaf of walnut cheese bread. I just happen to have all the ingredients in my pantry. Its not a yeast bread, its a quick bread. More like savory cake than bread, but tasty and satisfying none the less.
